How’s your life planning coming along? If you don’t have some kind of plan, I encourage you to create one. It reminds me of the Alice and Wonderland quote: “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” When we were younger, remember how we planned for the future? We thought a lot about, schooling, jobs, relationships, finances, etc… I encourage you to continue planning for the future!
Here are three keys I’ve learned along the way about life planning:
- Create a diversified “life portfolio.” – just like having a diversified financial portfolio. Start now. See the Retirement Transition Wheel on my website along with my free Midlife Planner.
- Life planning includes challenging transitions. Living through the “messy middle” is a rite of passage to get to the other side – whether it’s leaving your main career or going through some other transition.
- Life plans are made to be broken. Planning for what to do after retirement makes sense but it isn’t everything. While it’s good to have a plan, expect it to change as life unfolds.
The good news is…over time, most people figure things out and are happy in retirement – especially if they have a balanced portfolio of activities and a sense of purpose.
